4 Days Mount Meru Climbing
Mount Meru, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and a spectacular volcanic cone located in Arusha National Park. Often used as an acclimatization climb before Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is a rewarding trek in its own right—offering breathtaking scenery, diverse wildlife, and fewer crowds. The trail takes you through lush forest, moorland, and dramatic ridgelines, culminating at Socialist Peak, where you’ll witness one of the best sunrise views over Kilimanjaro.
itinerary
Day 1
Arusha to Momella Gate – Hike to Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast, you’ll drive from Arusha to Momella Gate (1,500 meters), where park registration and a briefing will take place. Your trek begins through savannah and lush rainforest, where you may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, and monkeys. The trail gradually ascends to Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters), your first overnight stop. The hike takes 4 to 5 hours through scenic landscapes and open glades.
Day 2
Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
Today’s trek continues through montane forest and heather zones, climbing steadily via the Elephant Ridge with incredible views of Meru Crater and the Ash Cone. After 3 to 5 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Saddle Hut (3,570 meters), located just below Little Meru. In the afternoon, an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 meters) offers fantastic vistas and prepares your body for the summit.
Day 3
Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut
Your summit attempt begins around 2:00 AM. Equipped with headlamps, you’ll ascend along a narrow ridgeline that leads to Rhino Point (3,800 meters) and onward to Cobra Point (4,350 meters), before reaching Socialist Peak (4,566 meters) at sunrise. The summit offers dramatic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the crater, and the Rift Valley. After celebrating at the peak, you’ll descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for your final overnight stay. Total trekking time is approximately 10 to 12 hours.
Day 4
Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate – Return to Arusha
After breakfast, continue your descent along a different trail, enjoying a leisurely 2 to 3-hour walk back to Momella Gate. Along the way, you may see more wildlife and waterfalls within Arusha National Park. At the gate, you’ll receive your climbing certificate before being transferred back to Arusha.
